What does a Youth Squad member do?
|
|
A member of the youth squad has many responsibilities and opportunities. A youth squad member will have the opportunity to learn about emergency medical services. In order to join the Leonia VAC, you must be at least 16 years of age. You will be required to attend Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Training within 9 months of becoming a member of the Youth Squad. EMT training consists of 120 hours that includes time in a classroom setting, but also outside practical experience doing some hands-on first aid practice and in addition will spend 10 hours observing and assisting in a local hospital emergency room. In addition to training factor, youth squad members expected to attend Corps meetings and other Corps activities and are given the opportunity to ride as Observers with a duty crew. This gives the new member a chance to experience this type of service work first hand. What is the Point of Having the Youth Squad Program? A youth squad program helps young people to experience this demanding, but very rewarding, type of work before they have to choose their career path. Many former Youth Squad members have gone on to successful careers in the medical field. This program also helps the Volunteer Ambulance Corps to recruit new members who may remain with us for many years. Our youth squad members will be the next generation of EMT's, and this program helps to provide Leonia with good quality individuals who will gain self confidence in their ability to "make a difference" in the world, while helping to save lives. |
